Japan passport: Austria bilateral stay rules

Austria’s Ministry states that Japanese passport holders can generally spend 90 days in Schengen followed by six months in Austria under the 1958 agreement. This is a one-time extension of the current stay, requires the Austrian procedure to be followed, and is decided case by case by the competent authority; six calendar months are not a fixed 180 days.

Territory and departure conditions

Leave the Schengen Area directly from Austria. The Austrian Ministry says the agreement cannot be used to re-enter after departure and does not permit onward travel through other Schengen states to exit.

A bilateral waiver does not establish a right to work. Check national rules for the activity you plan to undertake.

Request and EES record

Since EES was introduced in Austria on 12 October 2025, a traveller intending to use the agreement must invoke it at entry if first entering Schengen through an Austrian border point, or contact the Provincial Police Directorate where they reside before the ordinary 90/180-day allowance expires. The authority decides each case; this is not an automatic extension.

  • A valid Japanese passport.
  • Invoke the agreement at an Austrian border point or contact the competent Provincial Police Directorate before the ordinary 90/180-day allowance expires; confirm the evidence required for the individual application.
  • Keep evidence of the authority's decision and the planned direct departure from Austria.
Confirm the current national application procedure before relying on an Article 20 agreement. A short-stay calculator cannot determine eligibility for a national extension.

Frequently asked questions

Can Japanese citizens stay in Austria after using the usual Schengen allowance?

Austria’s Ministry says a continuous 90-day Schengen stay followed by six months in Austria is generally permitted under the agreement. The extension is a one-time use of the current stay and the authority makes the final decision case by case.

What must I do under EES to use the agreement?

If first entering Schengen at an Austrian border point, invoke the agreement there. Otherwise contact the Provincial Police Directorate for your Austrian residence before the ordinary 90/180-day allowance expires.

Can I travel to another Schengen country during the Austrian extension?

No. The authorized stay is limited to Austria, and departure from Schengen must be directly from Austria. The Austrian Ministry says the agreement cannot be used to re-enter after departure.
