New Zealand passport: Multiple Schengen states bilateral stay rules

The Commission's 2019 notice lists New Zealand passport agreements in multiple Schengen states, including Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Switzerland. Each country's notice has its own authorized period and passport conditions. Do not treat the list as a single area-wide allowance or assume sequential stays are automatically lawful.

What the official source says

The Commission's 2019 notice lists New Zealand passport agreements in multiple Schengen states, including Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Switzerland. Each country's notice has its own authorized period and passport conditions. Do not treat the list as a single area-wide allowance or assume sequential stays are automatically lawful.

The Commission notice identifies the passport category and authorized period reported for this state. For three-month notices, three calendar months are not necessarily exactly 90 days.

Territory and departure conditions

Any stay authorized under Article 20(2) is limited to the territory of the authorizing state, and the traveller must exit at that state's external border.

A bilateral waiver does not establish a right to work. Check national rules for the activity you plan to undertake.

Request and EES record

EES records short-stay entries and exits. If a state authorizes an Article 20 extension, its competent authority must record it in the relevant EES record. The regulation does not prescribe a general rule to avoid automated gates.

  • Check the Commission notice for the passport category and period listed for each state.
  • If a request is made after the 90-day period, Article 20 requires credible evidence that the preceding stay was only in the authorizing state.
Confirm the current national application procedure before relying on an Article 20 agreement. A short-stay calculator cannot determine eligibility for a national extension.

Frequently asked questions

Does one New Zealand agreement create a single Europe-wide stay allowance?

No. The Commission notice lists agreements by individual state, with different periods and passport conditions. Article 20(2c) also limits an authorized extension to the granting state's territory.

Can I move between listed countries and add each period together?

The Commission's list does not establish a general right to chain stays between countries. Each national agreement and procedure must be checked with the relevant authority.

How is an approved extension reflected in EES?

The EES regulation requires the competent authority in the authorizing state to enter the extension in the relevant EES record.
