Schengen Airport Transit Visas: When You Can Stay Airside

An airport transit visa covers a connection through the international transit area; leaving that area means crossing into the state and may require a different visa or entry permission.

An airport transit visa (ATV) is for passing through the international transit area of an airport in a Schengen state while connecting to a non-Schengen destination. It does not authorize entry into the Schengen area.

Airside transit versus entering the country

  • If you remain in the international transit area and continue to a non-Schengen destination, an ATV may be the relevant visa category.
  • If you leave the transit area, collect and re-check baggage landside, change airports, or connect to a Schengen destination, you may be entering the territory and need a short-stay visa or visa-free permission.
  • The airport, itinerary, nationality, and any applicable exemption affect the result.

Requirements vary by nationality and airport

Some nationalities need an ATV at all Schengen airports; individual states may also impose airport-specific requirements for some travellers. The Visa Code contains a common list and exemptions. Check the current list and the rules for every airport on your itinerary.

A connecting ticket does not guarantee that you can remain airside. Confirm whether your terminal transfer, baggage arrangement, or overnight connection requires passing border control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an airport transit visa let me visit the city?

No. An ATV authorizes transit through the international transit area; it does not authorize entry into the Schengen territory.

Do all nationalities need an airport transit visa?

No. The common list and state-specific requirements apply to certain nationalities and include exemptions. Check the current Visa Code and the airport-state rules.

What if I need to collect my checked bag?

If collecting baggage requires leaving the international transit area, you may need permission to enter the country. Confirm this with the airline and destination state's visa authority before booking.
